Input controls
Use ⋯ > Touch mode, Settings > Input > Touch mode or Developer Tools > Input > Touch mode to choose Pencil & Touch or Touch Only. The choice persists and applies to all tabs and windows immediately without reloading. Other experimental input switches still apply to the current tab and new tabs. Safe mode disables Folio’s adaptations.
Touch modes
- Pencil & Touch: Pencil is the pointer. One finger on the canvas pans like the Hand tool; two fingers pan and pinch to zoom.
- Touch Only: one finger on the canvas clicks, selects, moves or draws a marquee using mouse events. Hold still for about half a second for a context menu. Two fingers pan and pinch to zoom.
Before you choose a mode on iPad, Folio follows the system’s “Only Draw with Apple Pencil” preference: ON starts with Pencil & Touch; OFF starts with Touch Only. On iPhone, the automatic default is Touch Only until a Pencil is observed. The first Pencil contact selects Pencil & Touch as the automatic default once and records that change in the local diagnostic log. A mode you choose always wins. Both modes keep the same sidebar finger scrolling and two/three-finger Undo/Redo rules below.
Apple Pencil
Standard mode sends Pencil input to WebKit natively, including sidebar clicks, layer drags, resizing and hover on supported hardware. Pencil never waits for the finger hold/haptic path. With Touch gestures enabled, a stationary Pencil press of about half a second opens a context menu at that point; moving more than 6 CSS pixels cancels the hold. Panel edges use native Pencil hits, with no synthetic resize retargeting. Real Figma acceptance, including thin handles, still needs a device check by Folio’s developer.
Alternative Pencil routing stays in Developer Tools > Experimental, pending a separate product decision. The mouse fallback requires the pen-drag-unusable device verdict; recognizer rerouting remains unverified. Settings > Input offers Pencil actions rather than these expert strategies.
Double tap defaults to Undo; Apple Pencil Pro squeeze defaults to Redo and fires once on release. In Developer Tools > Input, use the Double-tap and Squeeze menus to choose editing commands, Dev Mode, Figma UI visibility, tools, bottom toolbar visibility or tab cycling. None disables an action. Bindings persist across tabs, windows and relaunches. Actions work in file tabs, including while typing, and pause on Home, in Safe mode and while a Folio sheet or popup is open. No extra haptic is added; input logging records only the gesture and command name.
System setting reads the corresponding iPadOS preference. Ignore and system shortcuts are left to iPadOS. Eraser, previous-tool and palette choices currently do nothing because Figma exposes no browser-standard equivalent. FolioPreferences provides pencilActions, pencilBinding(squeeze:) and setPencilBinding(_:squeeze:); action entries provide title and symbol.
Shortcut sources checked 2026-10-09: Dev Mode Shift+D and Text T, UI Command+backslash, Move V, Frame F, Rectangle R, Ellipse O, Line L, Pen P, Hand H and Comment C. These use the bottom toolbar’s standard event transport; Figma acceptance still needs testing by the developer.
Touch
With Touch gestures enabled, Home files open with a tap and canvas holds open a context menu. Figma’s sidebars, Layers/Pages lists, properties, toolbars, menus, dialogs and plugin panels use WebKit’s native finger, Pencil and trackpad/mouse behaviour in both touch modes. Folio does not defer presses, replay clicks or drags, pause scrolling or suppress system drag lifts there.
Hold a finger or Pencil still for about half a second in a panel for a right-click menu. This passive timer never cancels the native touch and stops on movement, cancellation, scrolling, native dragging or another contact. Native finger scrolling may select Layers rows; that limitation is accepted for now. The separate Resize helper stays enabled independently.
With Two-finger canvas pan enabled, drag two fingers over the canvas to pan or spread/pinch them to zoom in either mode. A second finger cancels the current one-finger selection or pan; lifting one finger does not restart selection. Three-finger motion does not pan or zoom. Panel resizing starts immediately for a finger at a detected edge with Resize helper enabled.
With Multi-finger tap undo/redo enabled in Developer Tools > Input, tap the canvas with two fingers to undo or three to redo. All fingers must land on the canvas, stay within 8 points and lift within 300 ms. Pan or pinch takes priority. Pencil and trackpad contacts do not trigger these taps. The switch defaults ON and persists; Safe mode disables it. Commands use the bottom toolbar transport. A visible focused DOM editor disables custom taps. Hidden keyboard sinks do not block canvas taps. Recognition runs alongside WebKit pan/pinch; movement and actual canvas pan/pinch reject the tap. Input logging records recognizer states and gate reasons.
Folio returns .none from UIKit’s public editingInteractionConfiguration while this feature is enabled in an eligible document without a focused DOM editor. Home, Safe, OFF and DOM editor focus return .default, preserving system editing gestures there. Apple describes this opt-out in Modernizing Your UI for iOS 13. WKWebView system-menu suppression and Figma gesture acceptance still require an iPad check.
Trackpad and mouse
Use native pointer clicks and drags. Outbound system drags and incoming drops retain WebKit’s native behaviour, matching Touch gestures OFF. Trackpad pinch zoom adapts a pinch over the canvas into canvas zoom. Ctrl-scroll over the canvas also zooms when that switch is enabled. Pinching over panels is not a canvas zoom command. These controls are separate from interface zoom in ⋯ or Settings > Display.
Bottom toolbar
File tabs show a bottom toolbar. On iPad, the left side has Shift, Control, Option and Command, then the arrow key. On the right are Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Duplicate, Select all, Group, Ungroup and Frame selection. There is no Dev Mode button on iPad or an unfolded iPhone Duo; use the Dev Mode switch in Figma’s own tool bar. Hide or show it from ⋯, Settings > Display or ⌃⇧⌘B. The on-screen keyboard covers it while you type.
Tap a modifier to toggle it on (solid blue); tap again to turn it off. It stays on across actions. Hold a modifier to use it while pressed; releasing the hold restores its previous toggle state. Flick the arrow key toward a direction to press that arrow; keep holding to repeat. Shift with an arrow is a big nudge. Switching tabs, navigation, page blur or backgrounding clears held state.
iPhone tool strip and panels (Alpha)
See the iPhone Alpha guide for the floating tool pill, Design | Dev switch, tool cycling, portrait sheets, landscape side panels, number keyboard and folded/unfolded Duo controls. It distinguishes shipped behavior from remaining device checks.
